It has been 30 years since the World Wide Web was created, with British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee setting out the blueprint for an information management system in March 1989.
Since then, the internet has taken the world by storm, changing the way the public shops, finds out information, conducts business, communicates with one another, and makes appointments.
However, Mr Berners-Lee shone light on the milestone anniversary by claiming the web is no longer “a force for good”.
Instead, he noted: “The fight for the web is one of the most important causes of our time.”
When the inventor launched the idea of the World Wide Web 30 years ago, he probably could not foresee the huge impact it would have on society, with half of the entire population of the world now using it as a daily source of information.
However, Mr Berners-Lee wrote a letter revealed to CNBC claiming the internet currently suffers from “three sources of dysfunction”, including intentional, harmful behaviour. This involves online bullying, cyber attacks, and state-sponsored hacking.
He also noted that big companies, such as Facebook, Google and Twitter, are guilty of using people’s personal data.
The computer expert stated: “Companies must do more to ensure their pursuit of short-term profit is not at the expense of human rights, democracy, scientific fact or public safety.”
The last failure of the web, the inventor said, was the “unintended negative consequences” of free speech allowed on the internet that can lead to harmful, malicious content.
For businesses to stay competitive with their rivals, use of the internet – whether through their websites, content management or communication – is essential.
They should also enlist the help of a software quality management company to ensure they are following processes and using up-to-date technology in the most efficient way for the benefit of their business.
