We asked around to see what blogs and sites people read on a regular basis. This short list of 15 blogs for testers should be interesting, thought-provoking and useful for anyone involved in software development.
XKCD
Randall Munroe’s site, XKCD, has nothing to do with software development or testing but, as an ex-NASA robotics engineer and cartoonist, it has everything to do with geek humour.
StickyMinds
StickyMinds, a popular online community for developers, has extensive coverage of testing issues, including articles on test automation in an agile world and ways testers can add value earlier in the development lifecycle.
Google testing blog
The Google testing blog has contributions from dozens of people and archives going back to 2007 but, more importantly, Google’s experience at the heart of the internet gives its test engineers a unique perspective that can’t be ignored. Plus the occasional April Fool’s post, like this one on Quantum Quality.
Rands in Repose
The author of the famous (and helpful) Nerd Handbook and Managing Nerds, Rands in Repose is Michael Lopp, an author, software engineering manager and blogger.
Bruce Schneier
Bruce Schneier’s focus is on IT security but since so many security vulnerabilities originate with software defects, this is an important source of insights for testers and developers. In addition, his posts are always acute and well-informed.
Professional Tester
Essential reading for software testers, Professional Tester is a magazine but it publishes news and articles online too.
Tooth of the weasel
Tooth of the Weasel contains rants, opinions, articles, podcasts and insights from Alan Page, a 20-year veteran tester from Microsoft.
Coding Horror
Great insights into the world of development from Jeff Atwood’s Coding Horror blog. For example his recent article on 4K displays will be useful for anyone looking for the most productive working environment.
Test This
Eric Jacobson’s Test this Blog has interesting articles from the front line of software testing.
Software Testing Club
The Software Testing Club is a very broad and good source of information from test resourcing through to test management topics and everything in between such as careers and training.
Software Testing Help
Software Testing Help, as the name suggests, has a big following and deals with all facets of software testing including ebooks, training and test resources.
The Guardian’s Developer blog
The Guardian Developer blog deals with a broad cross technological advancements from Robotics to Digital Networks but gives thought to how these would be tested and what new processes would be needed to achive the testing.
Better Testing
Better Testing has a strong focus on Testing and processes. Some items can be very technical which to a techie tester would be heaven. They have a “Recommended Reading” section that deals from mind mapping through to Test Approach, Plan, Design and User experience.
Applitools Eyes blog
This blog has some good coverage of interesting test topics such as cross browser testing.
DragonFire Inc.
Janet Gregory’s site has a good broad spectrum of topics from one person.
